Susan Sidebottom

For Susan, the connection between people, particularly family, is her inspiration. As a result of that passion - and her four children - she emphasizes family portraiture that captures the uniqueness and inner beauty of each individual.

Susan fell in love with photography at age 13. Her parents gave her a Nikon 35mm for her birthday and her cousin, an experienced photographer, taught her how to use it. Even while completing a journalism degree at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, modeling in Chicago, and enjoying a successful advertising career in San Francisco, Susan always felt she was best positioned behind the camera lens.

In 2001, an acquaintance was admiring the pictures in Susan's home and insisted on getting the name of the photographer. Susan took the leap. She admitted the pictures were her own work and agreed to take the friend's photograph as a favor. That one favor turned into referral after referral, and soon Susan rented studio space in historic South End.

Beginning in 2007, Susan started bridging her passion for photography with her civic involvement. Her work on a project for the Department of Social Services highlighted their Senior Citizens Nutrition Program. Susan is currently engaged on a project documenting the working poor’s perspective on affordable housing in Charlotte. Visit www.photographyreflects.com to see Susan’s social change photography.
